Kamianske Reservoir

Lake Kamianske Reservoir, known in Ukrainian as Кам’янське водосховище (Kamians’ke vodoskhovyshche), stands as a testament to human ingenuity and nature’s bounty. Located on the lower reaches of the Dnieper River in Ukraine, this reservoir is a crucial component of the region’s hydroelectric and water management systems.

Geographical Expanse

Spanning an impressive 567 square kilometers within Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Lake Kamianske stretches 114 kilometers in length and up to 8 kilometers at its widest point. With an average depth of 15 meters, this reservoir is a significant body of water in Ukraine, formed between 1963 and 1965.

A Hub of Activity

Primarily serving as a hydroelectric power source, Lake Kamianske is also pivotal for various other activities. It aids in transportation, providing a navigable route for ships and boats. The reservoir plays a vital role in aquaculture, supporting fish farming which contributes to the local economy. In winter, the reservoir transforms as its surface freezes over, presenting a different aspect of its natural beauty.

Infrastructure and Development

The shores of Lake Kamianske are dotted with significant infrastructural developments. Notable among these is the Middle Dnieper Hydroelectric Power Plant, a symbol of the region’s commitment to sustainable energy. Constructed from 1956 to 1965, this plant harnesses the power of the Dnieper River, marking a milestone in Ukraine’s industrial history.

Furthermore, the reservoir shores host the ports of Kremenchuk and the Dnieper Mineral Enrichment Complex in Horishni Plavni, making it a strategic point for commerce and industry.
