Lake Kubenskoye, a notable natural lake located in Vologda Oblast, Russia, is renowned for its expansive and shallow waters. Covering a total area of 648 square kilometers, of which 407 square kilometers are free from islands, this lake stands out as a prominent geographical feature in the region. The lake stretches impressively over 54 kilometers in a northwest to southeast direction, with a maximum width of 12 kilometers.

The lake’s surface is situated at an elevation of 110.1 meters above sea level, making it a significant water body in the area. Despite its vast surface area, Lake Kubenskoye is relatively shallow, with an average depth of just 1.2 meters. However, its maximum depth can reach between 10 to 13 meters in certain areas. The lake is known for its dynamic environment, characterized by frequent storms and notable seasonal water level fluctuations. The average seasonal variation in water levels is around 2.4 meters, with a recorded maximum of 5.49 meters.

Lake Kubenskoye serves as the source of the Sukhona River, which originates from the lake’s southeastern corner, adding to its hydrological importance. The administrative jurisdiction of the lake is shared among Vologodsky, Sokolsky, and Ust-Kubinsky Districts within Vologda Oblast. In terms of size, Lake Kubenskoye ranks as the fourth largest natural lake in Vologda Oblast and the fifth when considering artificial reservoirs like the Rybinsk Reservoir.

The lake’s basin, spanning an area of 14,700 square kilometers, extends across central and northern parts of Vologda Oblast and even reaches into parts of Konoshsky District in Arkhangelsk Oblast. The Kubena River, the lake’s primary tributary, plays a crucial role in feeding its waters. This expansive and shallow lake, with its unique characteristics and significant ecological role, remains an important natural landmark in the Russian landscape.
